Text to Speech

Convert any text into natural sounding speech.

Turn any text into natural-sounding speech using your browser’s built-in voices. Great for proofreading, accessibility, language learning and listening to articles hands-free.

Use the tool

Uses your browser's built-in voices.

What this tool does

Text-to-speech converts written text to spoken audio. We use the SpeechSynthesis Web API, which exposes the high-quality voices already installed on your device — so you get the same voices used by macOS, Windows and Android system features, with no cloud round-trip.

Why people use it

  • Hearing your own writing read aloud is the single best proofreading technique.
  • Audio articles let you ‘read’ while cooking, walking or driving.
  • Accessibility for users with dyslexia or low vision.
  • Language learners can hear native pronunciation of unfamiliar words.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open the Text to Speech tool.
  2. Paste or type the text you want spoken.
  3. Pick a voice from the dropdown (the list depends on your OS).
  4. Adjust the speed slider if you want faster or slower playback.
  5. Click ‘Play’ to hear it. Pause and resume any time.

Frequently asked questions

Which voices can I choose?

Whichever voices are installed on your device. macOS and Windows ship with several; you can install more from system settings.

Is audio sent anywhere?

No. The Web Speech API generates audio locally using your OS voices.

Can I download the audio file?

Browsers don’t expose the synthesized waveform for download. For downloadable MP3s, you would need a server-based service.
